Roller Doors: What You Need to Know When Designing Your Shed

Benefits of Roller Doors for Sheds

Roller doors up to 5 metres wide can be incorporated into the design of your shed, allowing you spacious access to move vehicles and machinery in and out. Easy access is one of the key considerations when you’re designing your shed, so many of our customers opt to include a roller door as a must-have.

Your roller door offers lock-up security for your gear as well as good protection from wild weather, and can be included in your design as either a manual roll-up door or a motorised remote-controlled roller door.

Drawbacks

The majority of our custom shed designs include roller doors and although they are handy, they do have some limitations. Because they are made from a single sheet of steel, the whole thing may need to be replaced if you accidentally put a big dent in your door. In very high winds they can be prone to damage and a more heavy-duty alternative might be best if you’re in an area that sees wild storms.

Also, if you only include a roller door and skip a personal access door, you may find it a bit cumbersome to roll your door up and down when you just need to pop into your shed quickly. If space permits, it’s always a good idea to go with both a roller door and a personal access door.

Good to Know: Roller Doors vs Roller Shutters

Sometimes the terms roller door and roller shutter are used interchangeably, but they’re manufactured in different ways.

Roller shutters are made from heavy-duty hinged horizontal slats, whilst lightweight roller doors are made from a single curtain of lighter gauge steel.

"Buffalo Built offers a range of different roller door styles, but not roller shutters – these are generally better suited to big industrial sheds and buildings."
