ZINCALUME vs COLORBOND Sheds – Which is Best?

If you’re in the market for a new shed, you may be wondering whether to choose ZINCALUME® or COLORBOND® cladding. Both are popular choices, but which is the best option for your needs?

In this article, Ross Barker offers a quick overview of the different options available for Buffalo Built sheds, garages, carports and farm structures.

What is COLORBOND®?

COLORBOND® is a type of steel that has been coated with a layer of specially formulated paint. COLORBOND® steel is made from a durable ZINCALUME® core plus a baked-on corrosion inhibitor. This is then sealed with a tough exterior grade painted finish which is baked on, making it resistant to chipping, flaking and blistering.

“It’s very low maintenance and provides good energy efficiency due to the reflective properties of lighter colours.”

Take a look at our range of COLORBOND® colours here.

What is ZINCALUME®?

ZINCALUME® is a different type of steel that is coated with a layer of zinc and aluminium rather than paint. This gives it a unique look, but it is generally less popular than COLORBOND® as the shiny aluminium colour tends to dull over time.

However, it is very tough and highly resistant to scratches, offering a lifespan of up to four times that of regular galvanised steel.

ZINCALUME vs COLORBOND: Which is the Best Choice for Your Shed?

When it comes to choosing between a ZINCALUME® or COLORBOND® shed, there are a few factors to consider. Here are some things to keep in mind:

Appearance: If you’re looking for a shed that looks great, COLORBOND® is the way to go. It comes in a wide range of colours so you’re sure to find something that suits your property.

Durability: Both COLORBOND® and ZINCALUME® are highly durable, but COLORBOND® is generally considered to be the more durable of the two and it is less likely to change colour over time.

Price: ZINCALUME® is generally less expensive than COLORBOND® so if you’re on a tight budget it may be the better option.

“Ultimately, the choice between COLORBOND® and ZINCALUME® comes down to your personal preferences,” says Ross.

Additional Benefits of COLORBOND

In addition to its aesthetic appeal and durability, COLORBOND® offers several other benefits that make it an attractive choice for shed cladding.

One notable advantage is its corrosion resistance, which is crucial for ensuring the longevity of your shed – especially in coastal or humid environments.

The baked-on corrosion inhibitor provides an extra layer of protection against rust and deterioration, giving property owners peace of mind knowing that their shed will withstand the elements for years to come.

COLORBOND® steel also contributes to thermal efficiency, helping to regulate the temperature inside the shed and ultimately reduce energy costs. The reflective properties of lighter colours can help keep the interior of your shed cooler during the hot summer months, which creates a more comfortable working environment.

Environmental Factors

When choosing ZINCALUME® vs COLORBOND®, you may want to weigh up the environmental impacts of both materials. Both materials are made by Bluescope Steel, a business that has a strong focus on sustainability.

Both types of steel are manufactured using sustainable practices and are 100% recyclable at the end of their lifespan.

This helps reduce the carbon footprint of your shed project, and contributes to a more sustainable future.
