What Should I Budget for a Garage Door?

20 August

Garage door cost is one of the most common questions we get. The answer depends on a few things, and once you understand what drives the price, the numbers make a lot more sense.

Here’s a plain breakdown of what to factor in when you’re planning your budget.

1. Door Size

Bigger door, bigger price. Standard single garage doors are typically 2400mm wide. Double doors start around 4800mm. Custom openings, including extra-wide or extra-tall, cost more because the door is made to order.

Measure your opening before you do anything else. If you’re not sure, we’ll come out and do it for you.

2. Door Type: Roller or Sectional

Roller doors and sectional doors are priced differently. Roller doors are generally the more cost-effective option. They’re compact, reliable, and well-suited to most residential openings.

Sectional doors, like the B&D Panelift range, carry a higher price because of the design, the panel construction, and the finish options available. They also add more to the street appeal of your home, which has its own value.

3. Manual or Automatic

A manual door is operated by hand or chain. An automatic door runs on a motor. Automation adds to the upfront cost, but it’s something most people won’t go without once they’ve had it.

The good news is you can start with a manual door and fit a motor later. We carry B&D motors for both roller and sectional doors, so the upgrade path is straightforward.

“The best place to start is with the opening and what you actually need from the door. Once we know that, we can give you a much clearer idea of where your budget should sit.”

4. Installation

Installation is a real cost and one that’s worth taking seriously. A door installed properly will perform the way it should for years. A door installed poorly will cost you in repairs sooner than you’d like.

We offer both supply-only and supply-and-install options. If you’re managing your own build and have a trusted installer lined up, supply-only might suit you. If you want it done start to finish without having to coordinate trades, we handle everything.

5. Optional Extras

Things like insulation, keypad entry, smart phone control, ember seals, and auto-lock all add to the final price. None of them are essential, but some, particularly insulation and ember seals, are worth thinking about depending on where you live.

We can walk you through what’s worth adding for your situation and what you can skip.
