Which Direction Should Your Shed Face?

14 July

At Buffalo Built, one of the questions we’re often asked is “Which direction should my shed face?”

Usually, a North or East facing shed is a winner – however, this can depend on several factors, including the style of the shed, how you’re using it, and where your property is located.

Which Way Should My Shed Face?

North

If you position your shed to face north, the front of the concrete pad will remain dry due to the direct sunlight coming in. The inside of the shed will also remain well-lit, although elevated sun levels inside the building can make the shed hotter. On some occasions, storms can also blow from the north, creating the potential for rain and wind to enter the shed from that direction.

South

On the other hand, a south-facing shed will receive very little natural light, making it ideal for storing light-sensitive items. However, the front of the shed can become boggy in winter because it remains in the shade. Wind can often come from the south, which can blow debris and dirt into your work or storage space when you have the roller door up.

West

It’s not often that we’d recommend a shed that faces west due to the majority of our weather coming from that direction. This means the blazing summer sun and wild weather can encroach into your shed, heating up the interior or potentially damaging what’s inside.

East

Facing your shed to the east is often the most sensible option, as goods stored in your shed are well-protected, away from the weather, and without intense levels of sunlight. The morning sunlight on the front of the shed will keep the pad mostly dry which is always beneficial.

"Even though it seems like East is the obvious choice, you also need to think about existing buildings and trees, space limitations, and convenience. You might prefer your shed to look better from a particular angle, and often local council regulations can have a bearing on its orientation too," says Ross.
