Picking and Packing Like a Pro: A Stonefruit Storage Success Story

The Dream
Nazz from Hillside Orchard first contacted Buffalo Built back in 2021 as his family farm in Cobram was rapidly outgrowing its stone fruit packing and processing buildings.
Specialising in local produce such as cherries, peaches, nectarines and plums, the family-owned and operated business needed more space to store their picking machinery and equipment. They also needed better weather protection for their expensive machinery and fruit crates which were being stored outdoors.
Fast forward to today, and we’ve delivered both a large open-plan machinery shed and a separate similar-sized structure to house the orchard’s coolroom.
The Shed
Our first brief was to design a large open-plan space with plenty of flexibility for storing fruit-picking machinery and equipment. Our design team created a 24 metre long and 12 metre wide structure, with a 5.2 metre roof height that included one internal partition wall to separate a smaller multipurpose area.
Fitted with 3 large sliding doors, the shed was clad in Colorbond Pale Eucalypt Monoclad finish to complement the surrounding environment.
Returning to the orchard in late 2022, we delivered a second structure: Nazz’s business had continued to grow and he needed extra storage space for a coolroom.
This new shed is attached to an existing shed on the property, giving plenty of extra storage area and providing protection for the fruit. Once the slab was laid, our team looked after full project management of the build so that Nazz and his team could get on with the business of harvesting.
After some minor council delays, this project ran smoothly, although attaching the coolroom to the existing older structure proved to be a challenge. To solve this, our team designed a box gutter to handle rainwater runoff for both structures.
The Result
The Hillside team now have two strong, long-lasting structures to protect their valuable produce, machinery and crates from the harsh environment. Uniquely designed with a strategic layout specifically for the orchard’s needs, the coolroom shed and machinery sheds perfectly suit the way they operate their business.
Partitioned-off sections create further security and protect valuable assets from theft, and the owners are impressed with their practical, tough, secure and good-looking structures which also add value to the property.
