The Dream
Galen Catholic College is a Roman Catholic co-educational high school located in Wangaratta. The College’s Business Manager, Emily Hordern, and Maintenance Manager, Sam Cartwright, contacted Buffalo Built as they were frustrated at the lack of available storage space for their maintenance and sports equipment, plus they had no secure place to park their school bus.
In addition, Emily and Sam explained that the school required additional classroom facilities, so a new Vocational Education and Training (VET) classroom and outdoor education shed was part of their brief.
The Sheds
The Buffalo Built team stepped in to provide full project management including planning and building permits for this project. All up, five structures were designed and built with the help of our installers:
- Bus shed – 10m x 8m x 3.6m
- VET Classroom – 15m x 12m x 4.2m
- Maintenance Shed 1 – 12m x 7m x 4.2m
- Maintenance Shed 2 – 12m x 10m x 4.2m
- Outdoor Ed Shed – 12m x 8m x 4.2m
With a simple pitched roof design and clad in Colorbond steel, the sheds feature clean lines and practical features including personal access doors, windows, and whirlybirds for increased airflow. Clustered in a U-shape, these structures each add practical and flexible space to facilitate seamless learning for students and easier maintenance for the team.
The structures were delivered on time and within budget, despite some initial issues with building codes and classifications. Our experienced project management team was able to overcome this by engaging a building consultant to satisfy council requirements.
The Result
Our in-house building designers and project consultants ensured that the multiple structures were delivered seamlessly to the school, with minimum disruption to students. The new sheds now provide protection for expensive equipment and vehicles and also ensure the safety of students by giving them modern and flexible learning areas to enjoy.
Overall this project ran seamlessly, adding to our previous body of work for Galen College – Buffalo Built has now completed 8 sheds for the school to date.
