Need to Know:

  • Measurements are critical when designing a barn as there are several angles involved and the pitch has to be just right.
  • Barn style sheds are very versatile and can be used as stables or as machinery or mechanics sheds, as well as simply as a classic farm shed for your property.
  • Australian barns and American barns are slightly different – read on to find out how they differ.

Australian Made Barn Style Sheds

Building a barn style shed is an art form that requires some exacting mathematical equations. American Barn sheds are popular because they are functional, but also because they look great. However, we’ve all seen barns that just don’t look right. Without the right equations and angles, they can be a blight on your block, instead of the star of the show.

Designing Barn Style Sheds

Buffalo Built Managing Director Ross Barker has been building barns for more than 20 years and has tried and true formulas that ensure the structural integrity of your barn and make sure it looks perfect.

“When building a barn, it’s critical to get the measurements right for the three sections and for the pitch of the roof,” he said.

Ross also said the distance from the top of the wall to the top of pitch of the skillion is critical to get the measurements correct. Buffalo Barns are perennial favourites for our customers.

“Many people use them as stables, with the stalls on the side and breeze-away down the middle, or for things like mechanics, who have their hoists in the centre."

American Barn Shed with Mezzanine

Ross said American barn sheds were more popular with his customers, but he also liked Aussie barns.

“Barns are also popular for those building living quarters because you can have the option of a mezzanine floor.”

Unlike the American barn, the Australian made barn doesn’t have a drop from the centre roof section, but still has internal columns where the centre pitch joins a lean-to on both sides.

Ross didn’t want to give away all his trade secrets here for all to see, but he would love to discuss your next project with you!
